Gold jump
Pedro Pichardo became the Olympic triple jump champion, the only gold medal for Portugal at the Tokyo Olympics and the fifth in the country's history. In his first appearance at the Olympics, Pichardo jumped 17.98m, breaking the national record, which he already held, and setting the best world mark that year. He won with a clear advantage over his opponents, with Yaming Zhu and Fabrice Zango Hugues taking 2nd and 3rd place with marks of 17.57m and 17.47m respectively. In the end, he made no secret of the fact that his desire was to surpass 18 metres and beat the Olympic record, and he's keeping that goal for the future:
“The medal is the dream coming true, but I also love seeing my name in the record books, that's what I wanted here, the Olympic record or the world record.”
Pedro Pichardo
