Wines from the Setúbal Region

It is a flat, coastal region that develops in a maritime coastal strip, of marked Atlantic influence, with abundant rainfall and mild average temperatures. You can expect light and elegant wines, both still and sparkling, which have been a tradition in the production of these lands for many years.

A little bit of history

Setúbal

Eighth century B.C.

The wine produced would have been used in trade

Following recent archaeological excavations, grape seeds dating from the 8th century BC were found in the Setúbal Peninsula, which shows the antiquity of vine culture, which dates back to a period in the region long before the formation of Portugal.

It is estimated that the vine culture in the region was introduced in the Iberian Peninsula - Sado Valley - by the Tartessos, around 2000 B.C. - The wine produced will have been used in their commercial exchanges with other peoples. Setúbal was founded by the Phoenicians, around 1000 B.C. This people established commercial fiefdoms in Setúbal's territory in the 10th century B.C. C.

What to expect

Flat and coastal region

Let's focus on Moscatel de Setúbal: this fortified wine is characterized by its special qualities of aroma and peculiar and unmistakable flavors, resulting in particular from the Moscatel de Setúbal grape variety, which is considered the most aromatic grape variety in the world. It has a golden color, ranging from light topaz to amber, and an exotic floral aroma, hinting at orange blossom and linden, sometimes roses, with hints of honey, citrus, lychees, pears and dates in the young wines and more complex and subtle aromas with notes of nuts such as hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts in the older ones.
