Use of rainwater

Sport Lisboa e Benfica is aware that water, as the main source of life, is an indispensable resource for Humanity, and that drinking water is a relatively scarce resource, which urgently needs to be managed in the best and most responsible way possible.

It is common knowledge that sports structures are major consumers of water, especially football stadiums, due to their particularities and needs.

Thus, one can highlight the project to use rainwater to clean the stands of Estádio da Luz.

In addition to being a water management measure, it is also, for example, an energy management measure since the energy needed to run this water system is much less compared to that needed to run the public supply system.

Besides the energy issue, rainwater harvesting contributes, for example, to flood control, as part of the water potentially responsible for surface runoff is captured and stored.

At the Benfica Campus, this type of reuse is also currently done, although in a residual way. Rainwater is collected from the existing pond and is used only for watering the gardens, as even though it is also filtered, it still has some level of impurities.
