Benfica celebrations at the Estádio Algarve
In the wake of having secured their place in the final four of the League Cup, and ahead of the clashes with Bayern Munich and FC Porto, SL Benfica traveled to the Algarve to face Farense on Saturday night, November 2. Despite the various fronts in contention and the succession of matches, the focus is on game by game, seeing each one as a real final... and mission accomplished!
And it was with Trubin, Bah, Tomás Araújo, Otamendi, Álvaro Carreras, Florentino, Aursnes, Kökcü, Di María, Aktürkoğlu and Pavlidis that the eagles took to the Estádio Algarve pitch for matchday 10 of the Liga Betclic, against the competition's bottom team, led by Tozé Marreco.
An intense first quarter of an hour, with both teams looking each other in the eye, and the Algarve side's attitude eventually paid off. Minute 15, simple processes, a tense cross on the end line from Pastor, and Darío Poveda was able to anticipate in the heart of the box and fire it home for 1-0.
Trailing by a goal, the Eagles set out on a challenge of patience, it was necessary to break down the opposition's block and, after 21 minutes, the equalizer came. Exemplary work by Aktürkoğlu through the middle, dragging the Algarve defense and setting Álvaro Carreras free on the left for a powerful shot, with no chance of defense, to make it 1-1.
At the restart, Bruno Lage made a change to his line-up, with Beste coming on to replace Bah.
It didn't take long for the goal to come! And it was beautiful! A spectacular attacking move, with Di María driving forward and feeding Aktürkoğlu, who assisted Pavlidis... In the face-to-face with the Farense keeper, he didn't miss and the comeback was complete (1-2).
With the lead, Benfica continued to press, and could have settled the match in another, more peaceful way, but the truth is that there was a lack of inspiration at crunch time, and it took another dose of patience, sweat, dedication and hard work!
