The World Health Organization highlights the fundamental role of the Benfica Foundation.
22 August 2024, 18h49
The joy of Walking Football
Since 2016, the Benfica Foundation has been developing its Walking Football project as a tool to promote active ageing. It was a pioneer in Portugal in promoting and disseminating this sport, which applies to people over 50, recognizing its wide-ranging benefits for the well-being and physical and mental health of the elderly.
It was in this context that the World Health Organization became better acquainted on the ground with the work that the Benfica Foundation has been developing, recognizing that it fits in extremely positively with public health policies through the effective promotion of physical activity.
It is estimated that promoting this type of initiative can help saving 10,000 lives every year by protecting citizens from diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
The sport will continue to be developed by the Benfica Foundation, increasingly reinforcing its status as a social partner of the State and civil society in promoting healthier and more cohesive communities with high levels of well-being.
