Otamendi played the full 90 minutes in Argentina's triumph

On Saturday, July 27, at the Lyon Stadium, Otamendi, Benfica's central defender and captain, was in action in Argentina's victory against Iraq (3-1), on matchday 2 of Group B of the Paris 2024 Men's Olympic Football Tournament.

Otamendi captained his side throughout the match and, according to data from the Sofascore platform, recorded one clearance and one blocked shot, winning six of his 10 aerial duels. With 83 touches of the ball, the Benfica player had one shot off target and 94 percent passing efficiency (74 out of 79 attempted), including six long balls.

It was Argentina who opened the scoring in the 13th minute through Thiago Almada (1-0), but Aymen Hussein leveled the scores in first-half stoppage time (1-1). In the second half, Luciano Gondou made it 2-1 in the 62nd minute and Ezequiel Fernández made it 3-1 in the 84th minute.

With three points to their name (in their opening game, Argentina lost against Morocco) and with qualification for the quarter-finals still open, the Argentinian Olympic team will play the third and final match of the tournament's group stage against Ukraine on Tuesday, July 30, at 4:00 pm  (5:00 pm local time), again at the Lyon Stadium.
