PREVIEW

Benfica and Gil Vicente repeat an unseen duel since 2014/15. The two clubs meet at 7:00 pm on Saturday, at Estádio da Luz. The last match for the Championship, in the Cathedral, was held on December 21, 2014 – Gaitán scored the winner (1-0).

The two teams locked horns 41 times in all competitions, but history began to be drawn only in the early 1990s. The opening round of 1990/91 featured a Benfica-Gil Vicente match, with the eagles welcoming Gil Vicente to the Portuguese top tier. At Luz, 3-0, with goals from Vítor Paneira (18'), Ricardo Gomes (48') and Rui Águas (62' pk).

In total, the reds have 73% of triumphs (30 in 41) and only four losses.

Immaculate record in the Cup competitions

Apart from the matches in the National Championship, Benfica and Gil Vicente met in the Portuguese Cup and in the League Cup. In five matches, the most emblematic one took place on April 14, 2012, at Estádio Cidade de Coimbra, in the League Cup Final.

Benfica opened the scoring through Rodrigo, at 30’. Zé Luís scored the equalizer at 78’, but Saviola, at 84’, broke the deadlock and handed the triumphs– and the then 4th League Cup – to Benfica.

In the League Cup, there was another match between the two teams, in 2013/14, with Sulejmani scoring the winner; in the Portuguese Cup, the clubs met in three occasions. The first time was in 1997/98 and the tie (quarter-finals) needed a second match to be solved (1-1 and 1-0). The second time was in 2013/14 (eighth-finals), with the eagles beating Gil Vicente by 5-0.

In the tops from Benfica and Gil Vicente, there are several players with 10 or more matches played, but when it comes to goals no one beats Lima. The Brazilian striker has seven goals in seven duels and tops the goal scorers table of this "mini-championship".
