Benfica in the Liga NOS: goals scored in 16 straight matches

Benfica is the more prolific team of the Liga NOS, with 75 goals, and for that much contributed the streak of 16 straight matches scoring in, which is currently the best run in the Portuguese Championship. The streak began on December 9^th against Estoril, at Luz, in round 14, after the scoreless draw away at FC Porto.

Since then, Rui Vitória’s men never failed to find the net, even facing teams from the top half of the table, such as Sporting and SC Braga. Indeed, Braga is the only emblem close to Benfica, with 15 straight matches scoring in.

At home or away, thrashing or with less assertive results, what matters to Rui Vitória and his team, is to win final after final until the objective: the fifth league title in a row. For these goals that resulted for the most part in victories (14), the Benfica fans have been helping a lot.

If in the stands the public has been pushing Benfica towards the triumphs, on the pitch the artists have been fundamental for the goals they have scored. In this period, the eagles scored on 46 occasions (an average of 2,88 per game), with 25 being scored at Estádio da Luz and 21 away from home.

Inevitably, and although coach Rui Vitória always points to the collective as the cornerstone of success, there are individuals who stand out. In 2017/18, Jonas is an inevitable name. The Brazilian leads the list of top goal scorers of the Liga NOS, with 33 goals and scored 18 of the 46 bagged in Benfica’s 16 straight matches scoring in. The podium is rounded off by Raúl, with 6 – who was determinant at the Estádio do Bonfim, with a brace –, and by Pizzi, with 5.
