João Silva was unanimously appointed to the Athletes’ Commission of the European Olympic Committees (EOC). The decision resulted from a meeting of the organization's executive committee in Lausanne, Switzerland.

According to the Olympic Committee of Portugal (OCP), the Benfica triathlete is part of the structure of the Portuguese Olympic body, acting as secretary-general of the Committee of Olympic Athletes (COA). João Silva will serve the term between 2018 and 2021, during a period that includes the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020.

“This appointment is a great pride and it entails a great responsibility in the representation of the Olympic Athletes, being also the international recognition of the good work that the Athletes' has carried out in Portugal, "said the athlete in statements made to the OCP Website.

In 2011, João Silva made history, having been the first Portuguese male triathlete to win an elite triathlon World Championships event, and was at the Olympic Games in London 2012 and Rio 2016.
