Museum & Stadium By Night: Christmas Edition

On the day of SL Benfica's 121st anniversary, Friday, February 28, the Estádio da Luz and the Benfica Museum – Cosme Damião opened their doors once again for night visits. For the 3rd month running, Stadium & Museum By Night sold out with 750 people attending. Participants were surprised by the Cathedral's nocturnal illuminations and were presented with the Club's birthday cake. At the Museum, they were able to walk through the corridors of Benfica's glorious history, and it is worth noting that the writer André Pereira was present and offered some visitors portraits written in the form of poems. Another special Benfica evening, in communion between the Club's fans!

José Augusto opened the scoring, António Simões made it solid with the fourth goal and Pérides helped fill the pitch in SL Benfica's biggest ever win against Real Madrid, 5-1 - which was also the meringues' first ever defeat in the European Cup. On February 24, 1965, in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the competition that would evolve into the Champions League, the Estádio da Luz hosted an iconic European night for the Glorioso. The three legends, 60 years later, listened to Emissora Nacional's commentary of the game and relived the magical moments in their own detail. 

In front of almost 50,000 spectators at the Estádio da Luz, Benfica confirmed their qualification for the 2024/2025 Portuguese Cup final on Wednesday night, April 23, by beating Tirsense 4-0 in the second leg of the semi-final (goals from António Silva, Bajrami, Belotti and Barreiro). In the first game, the Eagles had won 0-5. Thus, with a 9-0 aggregate in the semi-final, the Glorioso reached the decisive match of the Portuguese Cup for the 39th time. On their way to Jamor, the Reds overcame Pevidém (0-2), Estrela da Amadora (7-0), Farense (1-3), SC Braga (1-0) and, finally, Tirsense in a two-legged tie.

Having celebrated his 75th birthday on Sunday, April 20, Humberto Coelho received a heartfelt and well-deserved tribute on Wednesday, April 23, at the Estádio da Luz, during half-time of the Benfica-Tirsense (4-0) second leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-finals. Captain for many years, he wore the Manto Sagrado for “14 fantastic seasons” and, on the pitch, he gave a special thanks to the fans. "This is more than soul, it's an extraordinary mystique! Only at Benfica can you feel this recognition and this glory and memory of having played for the best club in the world," said the former central defender.

A name engraved in golden letters in the history of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Humberto Coelho celebrated his 75th birthday, on Sunday, April 20. Captain for many years, he wore the Manto Sagrado 14 seasons and was - and is - a true emblem of the Benfica mystique, both on and off the pitch.
