National Championship 1971/72

An easy championship
Led by English Jimmy Hagan, Benfica renewed the title ten points ahead of the surprising runner-up, V. Setúbal. Sporting got the 3rd place, while FC Porto finished in the 5th place, 12 and 22 points away from the winner, respectively. For Benfica this was a one hundred per cent victorious season in the matches against historic rivals. The triumphs away: 3-0 at Alvalade, and 3-1 at Antas deserve a special mention. The “Reds” suffered only one defeat in Barreirense's field, and tied three matches. For the second time in a row, Artur Jorge was the best scorer with 27 goals and in June Benfica conquered the Cup and the sixth "double".
