Unusual title
Additionally to FC Porto and Sporting, Benfica had in Académica the team’s most fierce opponent. The competition ended with the “students” (Académica) in 2nd place, only three points away from Benfica. Until today, this was Académica best performance in the competition. Benfica was only able to reinforce the leadership in the 19th matchday, after winning in Coimbra against the “students” led by the great Mário Wilson. For the fourth time in a row Eusébio was the best scorer with 31 goals. However, the season would be tragically marked by the accidental death of Benfica defense Luciano.
