The Grande Torino – 75 Years of Legend

The day of 4 May 1949 marked a dark page in the history of world football.

After a match with Benfica in Lisbon, the plane carrying Grande Torino back to Italy crashed in Superga, a few kilometres from its destination, claiming the lives of the 31 men on board.

The Granata Club had come to honour the Benfica and Portuguese national team captain, Francisco Ferreira. But above all, it was due to the emerging friendship between the famous Chico and the no less famous captain of Torino and the squadra azzurra (Italian national team), Valentino Mazzola.

The impact of the tragedy left an indelible mark on the sporting world, raising the historic Grande Torino to the status of legend.

Since that handshake in 1949, the bond between the two clubs has remained unbroken. This is the basis of this hand-in-hand initiative. It leads us, together, to bring memory to life.

Because the tragedy is not dying but forgetting. And we don't forget.
