Under the guidance of the Italian manager Giovanni Trapattoni, Benfica finally returned to the titles after an unusual period of 11 seasons without a national title. Despite an unstable campaign, shared with their rivals, the “red” team was able to finish the competition three points ahead of FC Porto and four ahead of Sporting. One match to the end, Benfica overcame Sporting in the leadership after a 1-0 win at Luz, and marched to the title match, in Boavista's field, convinced of a successful result. A 1-1 tie gave them the title and restored the Club their historic status.
