Eriksson wasn't a man to fail twice. Despite letting the championship slip away and the European dream turn into smoke in the final in Vienna, he would lead the “red” team to victory in a National fiercely played against FC Porto. On the 34th matchday, an inspired César Brito set a checkmate at Antas. The forward entered the match, nine minutes before the end, and scored Benfica’s two goals destroying the intimidating opposition that overcame the fields. Benfica finished two points ahead of FC Porto and Rui Águas, with 25 goals, was the best scorer of the competition.
