National Championship 1988/89

Toni effect
Following the model introduced in the previous season, the National had twenty teams competing and a few unexpected results such as three draws in the first six matches, and two consecutive defeats, on the 19th and 20th matchdays. On the other hand, the team didn't lose again in the following 18 matches, pulling out a providential tie at Antas, in the 29th matchday, and defeating Sporting, with the title secured, at Alvalade by 2-0 in the penultimate match. Credits must be given to manager Toni who had led Benfica in the previous season in its seventh European final. With 16 goals, Vata was the best scorer of the competition.
