National Championship 1986/87

Mortimore's return
In a season that would acclaim FC Porto as the winner of the European Champions Cup, Benfica led by John Mortimore, who had just returned, was able to keep a remarkable cohesion finishing the competition two points ahead of the "blue" team, and losing only one match. The matches played against FC Porto: a 2-2 tie away, and a 3-1 win at home would prove to be crucial to give the title to Benfica. The title was celebrated right after three ties in a row, after a 2-1 victory over Sporting at Luz, when there was only one more match to play. This result would be repeated in the Cup final as the Club achieved its ninth "double".
