National Championship 1976/77

Three-time champions for the fifth time
After a shaky start – two ties and two defeats in five matches – it was clear that the team led by the newly arrived John Mortimore (English), would have to sweat to become, once again, three-time winner of the competition. For the remaining 25 matchdays, Benfica counted 22 wins and only three ties. The team finished the competition nine points ahead of runner-up, Sporting. This was the fifth time Benfica was three-time champion in its history and the fourth in the last 15 seasons. Goalkeeper Bento, who had been taking turns with José Henrique between the goalposts, finally took the role of head goalkeeper and in the attack a new genius was rising: Fernando Chalana.
