The best ever
Seven matches to the end of the competition, Benfica hadn’t lost any match and became champion for the third time in a row 18 points ahead of runner-up, Belenenses! Out of 30 matches: 28 victories and two ties. Sporting and FC Porto, in 4th and 5th places, ended with the same classification, 21 points behind Benfica. The “Reds” had an impressive record: 101 goals, with the 66 scored at home overcoming the sum of all of the goals scored in both rounds by the remaining 15 teams. With 40 goals (four scored in the 4-1 win at home against Sporting), Eusébio achieved for the seventh time, the title of best scorer in the competition, and best scorer in Europe, conquering his second Golden Shoe.
