National Championship 1970/71

Final countdown... Benfica-like!
After the 18th matchday, marked by a heavy loss at Antas against FC Porto, the “Reds” had a rough path ahead. However, eight consecutive wins allowed the team to dream with the title as the final countdown was approaching. Replacing Sporting in the leadership, Benfica ended the competition three points ahead of the “lions” and four ahead of FC Porto. Under the lead of a demanding Jimmy Hagan, Benfica becomes champion in the North, one match from the end, defeating Varzim by 4-0. A week later, a crowd filled the Luz (stadium) to celebrate and watch the last match which Benfica won 5-1 over Académica. Artur Jorge, with 23 goals, was the best scorer of the competition.
