National Championship 1962/63

No defeats away
After 23 victories and one defeat in 26 matches the two-time European champions conquered the 12th national title. Six points away from the winner, FC Porto was second. The “Reds” led by Chilean Fernando Riera excelled with extraordinary performances in the 13 matches away, winning 12 and tying only one, in Matosinhos against Leixões. Replacing José Águas, who was then reaching the end of his career, forward José Torres achieved 26 goals and received the title of best scorer of the competition. Along with Eusébio, with 23 goals, they summed more goals than any other team, except for Sporting and FC Porto.
