National Championship 1960/61

Mythical touch
A golden season, with the double conquest of the Championship and the European Champions Clubs’ Cup, gave Benfica a mythical touch. In the National, the team didn't give any chances to Sporting, their direct opponent. The “Reds” won all the matches at home and scored 92 goals in 26 matches, against 61 from their rival, who got the 2nd place. The title was secured three matches before the end of the competition and it was celebrated when there was just one more match to play, after an amazing 8-0, at Luz against Sp. Covilhã. With 27 goals, captain José Águas was, for the fifth time, the competition's best scorer.
