National Championship 1941/42

Breaking the spell
Taking advantage of the “duels” with Sporting – two triumphs by 4-1 away, and 4-3 at home – Benfica wins the Championship four points ahead of the “lions” who took the 2nd place in the general classification. The present edition of the championship was extended from eight to 12 teams, which allowed FC Porto to stay in the 1st division. The “Reds” led by the Hungarian manager Janos Biri reached the end of the competition with 19 victories in 22 matches, breaking a spell of three years without any titles following the 1937/38 win that marked the team’s third consecutive victory.
