Three-time champions for the first time
In a competitive championship, played until the very last day, Benfica ended up winning the last match against Académica by 3-1, surpassing the team’s historical rivals, Sporting and FC Porto. This final triumph assured the “Reds” to keep the same points as the northern club. The tiebreaker consisted in the results in the matches between the two teams. Benfica assured the title for the “red” team won 3-1, in Lisbon, on the 1st round and secured a 2-2 tie in Porto when there were only two more matches to play. For the first time a club had won three titles in a row in the history of this competition.
