Benfica faces Barcelona in the last 16

The draw of the last 16 of the Champions League held this Friday morning, February 2, dictated a rematch between Benfica and Barcelona. The 1st leg will be plays at Estádio da Luz, at 8 pm (mainland Portugal time) on March 5 (Wednesday), and the 2nd leg, at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, at 5:45 pm (mainland Portugal time) on March 11 (Tuesday).

In the ten previous meetings between the two teams, the record is slightly in favor of the Spanish side. Benfica have won two and drawn four, scoring 11 goals and conceding 13.

In the last match between the two teams, played on matchday 7 of the league stage of the current edition of the Champions League, Estádio da Luz was the scene of a 4-5, on January 21, 2025.

In the eight rounds of the league phase, Hansi Flick's team beat Young Boys (5-0), Bayern Munich (4-1), Red Star (2-5), Brest (3-0), Dortmund (2-3) and Benfica (4-5); they drew with Atalanta (2-2) and suffered their only defeat (2-1) against Monaco, the team the Eagles eliminated in the play-off round. Their 19 points allowed the Catalans to finish in 2nd place out of the 36 teams taking part and guarantee them early access to the round of 16.

With nine and eight goals scored, Lewandowski and Raphinha are on the top scorers' podium in the Champions League, just behind Guirassy (Dortmund), who has ten. The Brazilian international is also one of the leaders in assists in the competition, with five.

Domestically, Barcelona is in 1st place in La Liga, level on points with Real Madrid, and this season they have already won the Spanish Super Cup with a 2-5 victory over the Merengues in the final.
