Benfica will face Liverpool or Barcelona in the next stage of the Champions League.

Champions League trophy
Having qualified directly for the round of 16, the top eight teams from the league phase - who will meet the eight play-off winners - will be seeded teams in the draw and, in theory, will play the second leg of the tie at home. The ceremony will also determine the pairings until the final of the competition, as well as which teams will play the second legs of the quarter and semi-finals at home.
Having finished 16th in the league phase - with 13 points, thanks to wins against Red Star (1-2), Atlético Madrid (4-0), Monaco (2-3) and Juventus (0-2), as well as a draw against Bologna (0-0) - Benfica will face Liverpool or Barcelona, who finished 1st and 2nd respectively.
In the knockout stage play-off, the Eagles overcame Monaco again, with a 4-3 aggregate result (0-1 win in the first leg and 3-3 draw in the second).
Liverpool picked up 21 points and won seven of their eight league matches - against AC Milan (1-3), Bologna (2-0), Leipzig (0-1), Leverkusen (4-0), Real Madrid (2-0), Girona (0-1) and Lille (2-1) - before losing their last match against PSV (3-2).
Barcelona's total of 19 points is the result of six wins - against Young Boys (5-0), Bayern Munich (4-1), Red Star (2-5), Brest (3-0), Borussia Dortmund (2-3) and Benfica (4-5) - and a draw in the final round against Atalanta (2-2). On the opening round, they were beaten 2-1 by Monaco.
