In search of the eighth cup

This Wednesday, January 8, at 7:45 pm, at the Estádio Municipal de Leiria, Benfica faces SC Braga, in the semi-final of the League Cup. The club with the most trophies is looking for its eighth!

With seven trophies won in eight finals, the Eagles are continuing their journey in this competition, which has a new format this season. To reach this stage, the Reds have only played one match in the quarter-finals, against Santa Clara.

The match ended in a 3-0 win at Estádio da Luz, on October 30, 2024, with a goal from Di María and a brace from Pavlidis.

After facing SC Braga on Saturday, January 4, at the Cathedral, on matchday 17 of the Liga Betclic, the eagles will once again meet the Minhotos who, in the previous round, saw off Vitória SC (2-1).

In the history of League Cup duels, there have been four matches between Benfica and SC Braga. The balance is one win for the Reds and two draws in regulation time.

Overall, there have been 159 official matches between the two sides. Benfica have won 103 times (65%), with 31 draws.

Focusing solely on the League Cup, Benfica will be playing their 70th match in the competition, having won 65% (45) and drawn 19 times.

The Reds head to Leiria for the semi-final as the club with the most trophies in the League Cup - they beat their opponents in 2015/16, 2014/15, 2013/14, 2011/12, 2010/11, 2009/10 and 2008/09 - with a total of 139 goals scored (an average of 2.01 per game).

If they beat SC Braga, Benfica will face the winner of Sporting-FC Porto (January 7) in the final. The clash for the trophy is scheduled for Saturday, January 11, also at the Estádio Municipal de Leiria.
