On Monday, April 29, the Portuguese Sports Confederation (CDP) announced the list of nominees for the 2023 Sportsperson of the Year awards. The footballer João Neves is one of the seven Benfica athletes who are competing for the awards. The election is open to the public and voting can be done here.

The midfielder of the eagles' professional football is on the list of five chosen for the Young Talent category for his performances over the past year.

In the Male Athlete and Female Athlete categories there will be a "dispute" between Benfica athletes for the respective awards: Diogo Ribeiro (swimming) and Fernando Pimenta (canoeing) are nominated, as are Francisca Nazareth (football) and Teresa Portela (canoeing).

Finally, the duo formed in K2 500 meters (canoeing) by João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista is a contender in the Team category.

The winners of the six award categories determined by CDP will be chosen by the public and those present at the 27th Portugal Sports Gala, which will take place on Friday, May 3, at the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes in Lisbon.
