Gonçalo Ramos
His first steps in the world of football were taken at SC Olhanense, before moving to the Algarve Development and Training Center in 2011/12. He soon proved to be determined and dedicated to collective work for the benefit of the team, traits that endure today in his football.
At Benfica Campus, where he successfully settled in 2013, he went through several experiences in football terms that led him to play as a midfielder and forward, a position where he settled.
FROM THE ACADEMY TO THE FIRST TEAM
There were several levels of the Reds youth development covered by the player from Algarve, U-15 National Champion (2015/16) and U-17 National Champion (2017/18). In 2018/19, at just 17 years old, Gonçalo Ramos made his debut for Benfica's B team against Braga B, precisely on January 13, 2019.
The growth made in Benfica's Youth Development was always accompanied by a regular presence in the Portuguese youth national teams. In this journey, one of the highlights was in 2019, when, at the European Under-19 Championship, Gonçalo Ramos was the top scorer of the competition with four goals. He is now a Senior international and has a World Cup appearance (Qatar 2022) on his resume!
Resuming his career at Benfica, Gonçalo Ramos ended the 2019/20 season with two goals in the UEFA Youth League final, against Real Madrid, despite the defeat suffered by the Eagles (2-3), on August 25, 2020. About a month earlier, on July 21, 2020, he came on five minutes before the end of regulation time against Aves, on matchday 33 of the League, and scored two goals on his first-team debut.
ALWAYS EVOLVING
Gonçalo Ramos still started the 2020/21 season in the B team, having scored seven goals in the first four rounds of Liga II. He made his debut in UEFA competitions on October 29, 2020, in Benfica's home game against the Belgians of Standard Liège, entering at 80' of the match referring to matchday 2 of Group D of the Europa League.
That same season, on December 13, 2020, he scored his first goal in the Portuguese Cup, against Vilafranquense, in which Benfica won 5-0. His first game as a starter in the first team was precisely in the Portuguese Cup, on November 21, 2020, against Paredes, having been substituted at 69'. Gonçalo Ramos was then 19 years old, the same age when he played his first minutes in the League Cup, in the semi-final against Braga, in January 2021. His presence in the first team became more effective and the numbers showed that when the season ended: 12 games (4 in the League, 5 in the Portuguese Cup, 1 in the League Cup and 2 in the Europa League) and 4 goals scored (2 in the League and 2 in the Portuguese Cup).
MORE IMPORTANT STEPS
The process of affirmation of Gonçalo Ramos knew a new and important evolutionary trait from 2021/22, a season that ended with a clear record and where he amassed 46 games (29 in the League, 2 in the Portuguese Cup, 4 in the League Cup and 11 in the Champions League), 8 goals (7 in the League and 1 in the Champions League) and 2 assists (1 in the League and 1 in the League Cup).
That season, he made his debut in the qualifying round of the Champions League as a substitute in the 3rd qualifying round for the group stage, in Moscow, against Spartak, days before his first game as a starter in Championship matches for Benfica against Moreirense, on August 7, 2021. The debut in the Champions League group stage took place on September 29, 2021, when Benfica hosted Barcelona at Estádio da Luz.
ON TOP OF THE WORLD
Under Roger Schmidt, Gonçalo Ramos skyrocketed in the 2022/23 season, scoring 27 goals in 47 games as an eagle. The eagles' striker was the 2nd best scorer in the National Championship (19 goals) and, with more than 2300 minutes of play, he was one of the most preponderant elements in the sportive campaign that culminated with the celebration of the 38th championship title.
In the Champions League, from the qualifying round to the quarterfinals, Gonçalo Ramos scored 7 goals in 14 matches.
One of the positive consequences of his performances was the call-up to the Senior National Team during the 2022/23 season and the call-up to represent Portugal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he registered 4 appearances and scored three goals.
He has been with the eagle for 12 years. Now, the forward faces a new stage of his professional career at Paris Saint-Germain.
Thank You, Gonçalo Ramos!
