Portugal beat Republic of Ireland by 2-1 in Matchday 4, Group A, in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Rafa was a starter, João Mário entered during the match and provided an assist for Cristiano Ronaldo's clutch goal.

"There are no easy opponents, the coach warned us for that. We have the best player in the world and that makes it easier. The team tried everything, had a strong mindset. We expected the difficulties, Ireland is very physical, but we got the three points. [On his return to the national team] I felt good, I’m happy to be back, and now I got to keep working."
