On May 7, 1960, a plane landed in Goa, which aroused tremendous curiosity. Inside the aircraft was the Sport Lisboa e Benfica team that would tour the territory.

With the title "A year after Goa tour, Benfica won Euro Cup", the piece recalls the reception of the "Glorioso".

60 anos da digressão a Goa

With a squad composed mostly of players from the reserves, Benfica played and won three matches: 2-1 against Military Selection, 4-0 against Goa and 1-0 against Goa Selection. For the Reds featured Bastos e Marques as goalkeeper; Ramalho, Sidónio, Alfredo, Zezinho, Inácio, Jurado, Vieira Dias, Mendes, Palmeiro, António Moreira, Espírito Santo and Malta da Silva, as outfield players.

he motto was given to what was to come… Benfica won two European Cups, against Barcelona (1960/61) and Real Madrid (1961/62), and earned the nickname of "Glorioso" [Glorious].

For the people of Goa and the Sunday Times, one thing is certain: the Goa tour was a lucky charm for the Finals in Bern and Amsterdam.
