The Black Panther was distinguished on December 28th, 1965, but he only received the trophy on March 9, 1966.

Although he was awarded the Golden Ball in December 1965, the Black Panther did not have the trophy until the following year, on 9 March 1966, when the quarter-final match of the European Cup between Benfica and Manchester United was played at the old Estádio da Luz.
At home, in front of nearly 75 thousand spectators, Eusébio – at the time with only 22 years – received the prize in person and became the first Portuguese to be distinguished by the "France Football" magazine.
To this day, the Benfica legend and the great name of world football is still the only Portuguese player to receive the award while representing a Portuguese club.
