In a ceremony which took place this Saturday, in Moscow, João Pereira, triathlete of Benfica, was considered the athlete of 2017 by the European Triathlon Union (ETU).

“I’m very happy with this award. After being European Champions in the Olympic distance and in the sprint distance, a never before reached result, this award comes to reinforce the resulted and give me motivation. I had very strong opponents and it must have been hard to elect the winner of this award", said, in declarations to the Federation.

João Pereira competed with the Spaniards Mário Mola, the 2017 Triathlon World Champion, and Uxío Abuín Ares, the World Cup winner, in Weihai, China.
